Chapter 2: An unexpected encounter

The busy markets of Coimbra was about to close as night time befalls them. The horizon they stared across a few hours ago have been replaced by a homogenous sea of stars. It makes no difference whether you are looking at the sky or the ocean as they reflect each other's reflection across space.

"We are lucky Lady Lucrezia, the inn behind the Sea Elephant still has an opening. Forgive me, but I was only able to get one room." Lucius said apologetically, "I will just look for somewhere else to sleep at."
Lucrezia shook her head, she appeared to have smiled to Lucius, but other people would not have noticed this because of the stringent quality of Lucrezia's face. To most people, she appeared as cold and beautiful. "It's okay. You do now have to find your own room. We aren't in Luxem anymore and Vis to us is as essential as Vis to ordinary citizens of Granado Espada. We have to start saving from now on."

Then they heard footsteps, then silent. Lucrezia and Lucius looked at each other. They tried to pretend that they had not noticed anything. Lucrezia then whispered, "Since we got off the Pinta..."
Lucius nodded. He assumed that Lucrezia meant that she has felt that someone has been following them since they came off board. Lucius understood Lucrezia completely as they have communicated this way for the past few years as they have gotten used to each other as the years go by.

After Lurcrezia's 16th birthday, she has been officially awarded the title of as the First Daughter of the Second Family. This meant that she was the first-borne daughter of the Silva Family, who are the Second Family of the Luxem Kingdom.

Luxem Monarchy includes the ruling of the King of Luxem, the Khaimases, and the five families who by blood line and ancestral laws and contracts swear to forever protect the members of the royal family. Among the Five families are, the first family: Craeyon, the second family: Silva, the third family: Bennet, the fourth family: Reichter and the fifth family: Serbier.

The Royal Family and the Five Families are chosen by ancestral laws. There have been changes in the family names, but the same bloodline passes through them. Family rankings are chosen by the Royal family as a new king takes the throne and it is primarily based on military performance, economic contributions and personal favor by the king, in the manner of choosing the family rankings. It is by tradition that the First family stays within the Royal Family Castle and the other four families guarding the four posts of the kingdom.

Upon the coming of age, 16 years old, the First Daughter and the First Son chooses their brother or sister by name. The brother or sister by name may be of with royal lineage or a commoner who have been trained of the royal ways or are regarded in high esteem by the Royal Family or the Five Families for their service and loyalty.

Lucrezia chose Sarcius Amannep as her Brother by Name, and ever since, Sarcius has been dubbed "Lucius Silva, sire to the First Daughter of the Second."

The silent continued for another minute. Lucrezia nodded at Lucius.

"Detection." Lucius whispered, and like the eyes of an eagle, his eyes accomodated to the night sky and got vision of a man who was breathing heavily behind the house near them. He recognized this man as someone from the market. Lucius ran towards his direction.

The man started running. Lucius and Lucrezia followed but eventually failed to follow the man.

Then they stopped. Lucius then said, "Must be another one of those Republicans recruiting people."
Lucrezia muttered, "It's perfectly understandable, we are new here and we are perfect preys for their unnecessary cause."

Lucius then noticed something on the floor. He assumed that the man might have dropped this. He could not make sense of it at first, but as he read the letter more intently and not just skimming through the words, he saw strange and unexpected familiarity with what it contained.

He then gave it to Lucrezia. Like Lucius, she could not make sense of it at first, but definitely as she finsihed reading she knew there was something more to this letter than words.

It appeared to be the last entry from a journal of Misia Reichter, lady to the First Daughter of the Fourth.
